Guimarães Noc Noc is one of Portugal's most dramatic annual celebrations of art. In 2012 the City of Guimarães was recognised as a creative centre in Europe being nominated the European Capital of Culture. Each year the town centre of Guimarães is transformed into an enormous gallery for the public to engage in, with submissions from artists from all over the country encompassing the full range of visual art including installation and live performance, curated at locations dotted around the city. Each year Guimarães Noc Noc festival invites a foreign contingent of artists from a selected country – in 2012 a delegation of artists from Japan were the highlight nation, and in 2013 Many Studios were proud to be asked by the festival to select a group of artists from Scotland to participate.
Selected artists were Phoebe Amis & Gordon Douglas, Conor Baird and Hardwear Glasgow who undertook the 'signage project', the important role of designing bespoke signs highlighting all the key locations of the festival. As part of the residency participants were given free accommodation for a week in Guimarães to enable them to prepare for the festival on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th of October 2013.
The projects undertaken by the Scottish contingent provided an innovative contribution to the festival and new exciting friendships and partnerships have been formed between the two countries.
In 2014 MANY brought the spirit of Guimarães back to Glasgow, during the GI Festival, by hosting nine Portuguese artists and facilitating a public workshop in Glasgow’s GOMA and discussions with Glasgow Open House Festival.
